Vieem: If Only You’d Know

So a few weeks ago I came across a new, potentially upcoming artist, Vieem, a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. Vieem was pulled into music from a young age; she was taught to play the piano by her father and has since never left the music behind. I must confess, I didn’t expect much, but I decided to give one of her tracks a chance anyway, and so I gave it a listen, and my expectations were exceeded.

I’ve heard many an alternative pop song, and I’m not much of a pop person, but I did enjoy listening to If Only You’d Know. It’s a song with quite a haunting melody, quite a melancholy tune, and a voice that resonates like those you hear in popular ballads. But there’s something a little different about this song. It sounds like an artist trying to get her break; it’s trying, but not trying too hard. It’s not over-produced and you can actually hear her voice. It doesn’t sound auto-tuned, and honestly just sounds honest. I suppose that’s why I like it.

I think pop music has got to a place where it’s soulless, but even through this track’s generic feel you can tell that it’s genuine. It’s not the tosh that you hear on the radio, nor the overly catchy Rihanna or, dare I say, the overly annoying Carly Rae Jepsen. I think that Vieem has a good voice, and I think the melody of the track is good. It goes a few places that you wouldn’t expect, but the sound of the song is peaceful, if sad.

It’s hard to review an artist from one track, but this track isn’t bad. I don’t think it’s perfect. I’m not overwhelmed when I listen to it, but it’s good. Not brilliant, but good. It’s definitely a start. It’s not a song that I’ll have stuck in my head for days, but that’s mainly because as part of a genre of music, it’s not really the sort of thing that I listen to. Having asked a few people, I’ve had the same thing said to me over and over again: she’s good, but not amazing. The track is decent, but not a hit. It needs something of an extra push to get it that little bit further, but in my opinion, it’s definitely got something. I’m no musician, but I think there’s something there.

I’ve probably listened to If Only You’d Know about eight times now in preparation for writing this piece, and I’m not sick of it yet. I think that’s the sign of a decent song, and while I don’t think this particular track is going to be a hit, I think you should definitely give it a listen. There isn’t much more for me to say. I think Vieem could go places. I think she could join that industry and I think that she could potentially produce popular tracks, but only with the right team behind her. Until then, I think she’s one to watch – she could go places.

If Only You’d Know is part of Vieem’s album, Be It Hated, more details can be found on her website. You can visit Vieem’s website here.
