NW by Zadie Smith

NW2

Many rumours seem to arise when discussing Zadie Smith. The first being that her debut novel White Teeth commanded an advance of £250,000 even before completion in 1997. The second being that Smith changed her name from Sadie to Zadie in an attempt to appear more ‘exotic’, (this one I believe to be true). Being a mixed-race Briton with a Jamaican mother and an English father doesn’t stick out anymore, apparently. A thought only illustrated with The Greater London Authority’s prediction that ‘The BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) population will grow by 1.05 million between 2006 and 2031”. Perhaps being ‘exotic’ or of ethnicity will be more predominant in the capital sooner rather than later? Her fourth novel NW,… more

Apple has won a landslide verdict after the jury found that Samsung infringed many of Apple's patents, designs and trade dresses.

Cybercrime and phone hacking is too common these days. It has become just another worry we must endure. Our lives used to be simple. A mobile phone was for phone calls only. Nowadays a mobile phone is for texting, social networking, emailing, photographing, videoing, banking, work, creating documents and only occasionally for making a phone call. Our life can conveniently fit into the palm of our hands, but the downside to having everything squeezed into a palm-sized device is that it can be hard to cope when something unexpected happens to the device. Despite almost 70% of iPhone accidents occurring as a result of the owner, the majority of us do not take out the recommended mobile phone insurance when… more

“A university President has three key tasks which his or her main stakeholders will expect to see achieved: sex for the students, athletics for the alumni, and parking for the faculty.” At least that’s what Clark Kerr, former Chancellor of the University of California, suggests in his book, The Uses of the University. He then quips that only the last of these presented a problem. Ferdinand von Prondzynki, the current Principal and Vice Chancellor of The University of Aberdeen, recently made reference to this quote on his blog that in his time as President of Dublin City University, ‘some of the most intractable problems concerned car parking.’ With more students now owning a car, which was ‘not something that would have… more

Graduates first jobs

When you are at university having the time of your life and socialising, job searching may not be on your mind – who cares, you have all the time in the world, right? Unfortunately this is not true: the earlier you apply, the better your chances of being successful. So here are some ways you can think outside of the box and land the job you want. Networking Find out where the networking events are and what you want to get out of them. Have a notepad and pen handy to write any notes down. What you will find at these events is that you will usually get a name badge or sticker – use this to write down what… more

ASOS Dress For Less

University is a time where you come into complete independence and every responsibility becomes your own. Not only do organisation, time management and planning skills become inseparable with regards to studying but they are just as important when it comes to managing your student finances. Why knowing a foreign language boosts your employability

These days employers are increasingly raising their expectations of graduates, and since the recession business confidence has fallen, making it a tougher job market for graduates. With around 64% of students graduating with a first or upper second degree, graduates can find it difficult to stand out. Many are opting to gain practical experience in their field of expertise, but another successful way to do this is to learn a foreign language. While English might be spoken at international conferences it isn’t the most commonly spoken language. A recent article in the Guardian claimed that only 38% of people in the UK can speak a different language, which makes it a valuable skill to an employer. What employers look for… more

Apple has won a landslide verdict after the jury found that Samsung infringed many of Apple's patents, designs and trade dresses.

There are a number of 4G smartphones that have accompanied the launch of the EE network and people may well be mulling over which is the right one for them. Of course, they’ll all have their own supporters and detractors, but if there was one high point and low point to each – what would it be? Apple iPhone 5 You have to start with the Apple device really, which means traversing some very delicate areas and trying not to upset the fans. The truth is though, the iPhone 5 is once more the sleekest, most intuitive device out there and is a great successor to the 4S thanks to 4G, a bigger screen and a lighter body. If there’s… more

Tariq Ramadan is an Islamist intellectual who is much more prominent in France than he is in Britain, where he has remained somewhat peripheral in spite of a protracted dalliance with the left-wing press that followed the London bombings. The Guardian reached out for an appropriate Martin Luther-esque figure to calm the hysteria of the moment, and the charming Swiss grandson of the not-quite-so-charming Hasan al-Banna, founder of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, was on hand. Finally, a respectable representative of the Islamist side of the argument; the opportunity for a full and frank multicultural dialectic; the hope of splitting the difference between the clashing civilisations – an impulse that one might have associated more with conservatives than liberals, once upon a… more
