April 23rd was, as far as business was concerned, just another day. Shoppers floated through the streets of Newcastle as I headed home from submitting a politics paper that morning; I was not aware that my personal views were just about to be so vehemently challenged. “England for the English,” echoed behind wailing guitars, are the words of forever-controversial Morrissey, front-man of The Smiths, from his song The National Front Disco. A wave of alternative pop is upon us, ready to crash into our culture with force. And sure to lead the charge are Leeds-based fine-art, indie architects, Alt-J (∆). Formed in 2007, their name is in fact ∆ when written, but Alt-J when spoken. Known for tight, atmospheric live performances, they mix brilliant vocal harmonies, modified guitar, erratic electronics and folk sensibilities with a huge feel for rhythm and power. Vocalist Joe Newman’s distinct, shy voice fits the band perfectly. Recently championed by Radio 1’s Fearne Cotton, with their track Breezeblocks being named one of her top tracks for April, Alt-J are set to release their new album, An Awesome Wave, on May 28th across the UK.
