Interview: Craww
| May 8, 2013 | Posted by Nathan Scatcherd under interviews |
Sheffield-based artist Craww creates distinctive, eerily beautiful paintings, and his skills have steadily risen to international acclaim. I spoke to him about his art and asked him a few questions. Nathan Scatcherd: Firstly, what inspired you to make art, and how long have you been doing it for? Craww: I’ve always felt the need to express myself creatively in some form or another. I drew all the time as a kid and eventually pursued a career in graphic design. Eventual frustrations with trying to be creative in a commercial environment led me to quit and pursue art full time. That was about 4 years ago. NS: Your work has a fairly dark, gothic vibe. Do you feel that your… more
Blackbeard’s Tea Party: An introduction
| August 21, 2012 | Posted by Alaa Jasim under culture, interviews, lifestyle |
Walking along a street in York, I came across a funky folk-rock band called Blackbeard’s Tea Party. I bought one of their CDs and instantly fell in love. Blackbeard’s Tea Party have been one of my favourite bands for a long time, so when they agreed to answer a few of my questions I was quite excited. I got in touch, and here’s what they had to say. Alaa Jasim: First off, tell us about yourselves! Blackbeard’s Tea Party: We’re a folk rock band. We (mostly) live in York. There are six of us: Tim Yates – bass; Martin Coumbe – guitars; Dave Boston – djembe; Yom Hardy – kajon; Laura Barber – fiddle; and Stuart Giddens – melodeon and vocals. We’ve been… more

| August 13, 2012 | Posted by Alaa Jasim under culture, interviews, lifestyle |
Just over a year ago TSR met up with Laura Patrick to talk about her photography business, Laura Joy Photography, which she has been running alongside her A-levels. With hundreds more likes on Facebook since then it’s clear that Laura’s work has been increasing in popularity and success, and there’s really no question why once you flick through the amazing galleries of photographs she has taken and edited. I caught up with Laura to ask a few questions about her progress as a student photographer. Alaa Jasim: What are your photographic inspirations? Laura Patrick: Well, I take quite a lot of inspiration from the locations that I use and the type of model that I’m using. Sometimes I’ve done shoots with families… more
Flash interview: Jo Brand
| February 13, 2012 | Posted by James Harle under entertainment, interviews |
Comedienne Jo Brand was recently asked by David Miliband to give the annual South Shields lecture at Harton Technology College. The lecture, instituted by Miliband in 2001, has been spearheaded in the past by personalities as diverse as Tony Blair, Bill Bryson and Patrick Stewart. Brand is known for her hilarious contributions on panel shows such as QI, as well as her unique approach to stand-up comedy. However, what she is less well-known for is her staunch support of the Labour party – and so I caught up with her for some lightning questions after the big event. So, how does it feel to have entered the world of politics? I haven’t just entered the world of politics! I’ve been a supporter of… more

With 270 likes on her Facebook page already since Christmas, aspiring photographer Laura Patrick is churning out amazing photographs and getting the deserved recognition for all her hard work and dedication. Being a 17-year-old girl who also has A-level commitments to tend to alongside her photography shows fierce independence and drive; I met her in a coffee shop in York to discuss how she does it all, and where she wants to go next. What got you started with photography, did you have any particular influences? Well, I started using my mum’s camera and got a bit carried away sometimes, and then when we went to America she bought a snazzy one for the family and I really got into it.… more
York College’s art & design exhibition
| July 17, 2011 | Posted by Elliot Davies under culture, interviews |
Each year, York College puts on an exhibition for its AS and A2 Art & Design students to proudly display their work. The Student Review thought this sounded exciting, so we headed over to the College to take some photos and interview one of the students displaying their work, Becky Cook. Without further ado, here’s Becky… Which course are you on at the college? A2 Art and Design (Textiles) but I also do A2 Philosophy, Media Studies and English Literature. How many pieces have you had to produce this year, and what were they? Over the two years, you have to complete 4 units, as you do for all A-levels. Each year you do one unit from September to February, which is a coursework project,… more
York Council outlines plans for students
| July 9, 2011 | Posted by Elliot Davies under features, interviews, national |
This article was written in conjunction with Tom Wooldridge. The City of York Council has promised protection for young people’s services, the inclusion of young people in talks about the city’s future, and improvements to York’s buses in a written statement by Councillor Ruth Potter, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People’s Services. After York Labour replaced the Liberal Democrats in the local elections earlier this year, The Student Review had hoped to secure an interview with either the Council Leader, James Alexander, or Councillor Potter, but was unable to do so. Instead a series of written questions was sent to Coun. Potter, whose reply outlined the Council’s new plans for young people and education in the city following the… more
