Placements: Why I Think Every Course Should Make This a Requirement

Johann Herbert is a French student currently doing a placement in the UK at Strategy Internet Marketing. He shares his experiences and gives advice to fellow students on how to find work once they graduate… Employers Want It All People today have a much freer access to further education than ever before, and as a result employers are generally expecting us to be extensively educated. It’s common for young people to study for many years before attempting to integrate into professional work environments. The irony is that the same companies that expect young people to come equipped with all sorts of qualifications are also expecting them to have considerable professional working experience. In turn, universities have adapted their learning programmes… more
Dark Skies
| April 21, 2013 | Posted by Emily Grieve under entertainment, reviews |
Film Information: Released in the UK April 3rd 2013; Certificate 15 Cast: Keri Russell; Josh Hamilton; Dakota Goyo; Kaden Rockett Director: Scott Stewart Screenwriter: Scott Stewart Running Time: 97 Minutes Plot As the Barret family’s peaceful suburban life is rocked by an escalating series of disturbing events, they come to learn that a terrifying and deadly force is after them. Review From the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious, the disappointingly generic Dark Skies can’t decide whether it’s a low budget sci-fi movie or another psychological ‘creepy’ horror. Either way, once you are faced another round of typical American Suburbia and typical non-descript family with ‘issues’, you don’t particularly care, and are left drumming your fingers waiting for the tension to build rather than gripping your… more

Firstly, I feel that I must apologise for my absence from The Student Review; I found my time suddenly filled with A-Level coursework, novels and revision based around Nazi Germany and assorted timelines of British Prime Ministers since 1903. While I had started to write this article a few weeks ago, I have only just found the time to finish it. With my exams so close, I dare say that you are quite lucky to be reading this review at all, as I hadn’t planned to post it until late May. On another note, if any of you have seen the movie adaption of this novel, or have even read the book, please feel free to drop me a line… more
Ding Dong! The Witch is dead – wrongfully censored?
| April 17, 2013 | Posted by Ellys Sugarman under national |
As I’m sure you are all aware the Iron Lady (Margaret Thatcher) has passed away, following a stroke in her suite in the Ritz on the 8th of April. Well the news spread like wildfire – once again showing the effectiveness of social media for spreading information though it were a virus. Of course the reaction was immediate, some were celebrating others mourned and many more people just took the piss. The song ‘Ding Dong! The Witch is dead’ became stuck in many people’s heads and while celebrating Thatcher’s death made me uncomfortable, I admit I was singing it. Only a few hours after her death it was announced that she would be getting a state funeral. The uproar was instant and… more
In the Picture: Shadow
| April 16, 2013 | Posted by Alaa Jasim under In the Picture |
People often compose pieces of art around the objects that are contained within the image. Often neglected are shadows and silhouettes, which are often just as powerful as the objects and pieces of substance that are casting them. This week, we asked the photography team to explore the theme of shadow, and to see what they could come up with in a week. Some shots were breathtaking, and some effective and subtle; have a look for yourself and see what you think! Here’s this week’s photo set: Thanks for flicking through our photos of the week, we’ll catch you next time with more! more
Where’s That Robot With My Damn Sandwich?
| April 13, 2013 | Posted by Tom Backhouse under science |
As I was idly masticating my breakfast sandwich this morning, I realised something; it’s already 2013. A whole 12 years have passed since HAL went a bit funny in interplanetary space, and it’s already three years since he was united with the floating consciousness of Dave Bowman and still no one has made me a robot. I once made myself one, sure, but it didn’t do a lot; it could follow a black line or not bump into things. I made it from a kit, which I got with a magazine as a kid. Every week I’d get my screwdriver out and add the next bit, and I can tell you, following a line while not bumping into things is bloody complicated. But still, it’s the future already! I’ve seen… more

Saturday 13th April 2013 Arsenal vs Norwich (15:00) Apart from a slip up against Tottenham, Arsenal have won their last six games, all of which have been against relatively weak sides. This game will be one where Arsenal look to improve their goal difference in the race for the top 4 as Norwich will pose no threat here. Norwich have only won one game away from home all season, and in the 16 away games they have played, they have only scored 12 goals conceding 32. Easy fixture for Arsenal. Prediction: 3-0 Aston Villa vs Fulham (15:00) Aston Villa have won three of their last four games, and their young inexperienced side have looked good in the process of doing… more
