The top 25 tracks of 2012 so far

I was planning to do my top 50 tracks of 2012 at the end of the year, but I’m pretty sure that would be too long and dull, so I thought to myself, “Why not split the list up into two shorter and hopefully less dull lists spread evenly across the year?” For those interested, this list has two rules: The track must have been released between January and June 2012 inclusive. For those of you who want to be completely pedantic, if it’s been released as a single and on an EP/LP then I’m counting the single release date. Alt-J (∆): Breezeblocks

A wave of alternative pop is upon us, ready to crash into our culture with force. And sure to lead the charge are Leeds-based fine-art, indie architects, Alt-J (∆). Formed in 2007, their name is in fact ∆ when written, but Alt-J when spoken. Known for tight, atmospheric live performances, they mix brilliant vocal harmonies, modified guitar, erratic electronics and folk sensibilities with a huge feel for rhythm and power. Vocalist Joe Newman’s distinct, shy voice fits the band perfectly. Recently championed by Radio 1’s Fearne Cotton, with their track Breezeblocks being named one of her top tracks for April, Alt-J are set to release their new album, An Awesome Wave, on May 28th across the UK.
