How safe is your smartphone?

Cybercrime and phone hacking is too common these days. It has become just another worry we must endure. Our lives used to be simple. A mobile phone was for phone calls only. Nowadays a mobile phone is for texting, social networking, emailing, photographing, videoing, banking, work, creating documents and only occasionally for making a phone call. Our life can conveniently fit into the palm of our hands, but the downside to having everything squeezed into a palm-sized device is that it can be hard to cope when something unexpected happens to the device. Despite almost 70% of iPhone accidents occurring as a result of the owner, the majority of us do not take out the recommended mobile phone insurance when… more

Welcome back to TSR on tech! After a few weeks of R&R we’re back and ready to bring you all the latest tech news – and just in the nick of time! This week we’ve scooped up announcements about the iPhone 5, Lumia 920 and Wii U (yes, seriously), as well as plenty of hirings and firings and, naturally, the odd lawsuit. Let’s go! Business Yahoo! is set to sell back half of its 40% stake in Alibaba, the Chinese internet and e-commerce giant. The sale, due to close next week, will be worth $4.5bn after tax – money that Marissa Mayer, Yahoo!’s CEO, will likely spend on acquiring a startup or three to bring some fresh faces and ideas to… more

Wow, what a week! This might be the most stories we’ve ever covered in one go, so let’s not waste too much time on introductions. Want to know about Sheryl Sandberg and Bob Mansfield? Jimmy Wales’ petition to save Richard O’Dwyer? Apple’s injunctions against Samsung? Details of the Natwest “meltdown”? Google skydiving? All that and much, much more below. Business Facebook has named Sheryl Sandberg, its chief operating officer, as its eighth director. In a statement, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, said: “Sheryl has been my partner in running Facebook and has been central to our growth and success over the years. Her understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes… more

For once it has been a generally positive week in tech, with good news on ACTA (i.e. bad news for ACTA) and an outcome to the Google-Oracle Java suit that will have developers everywhere cheering. There are also some nice announcements from Facebook, a slight increase in momentum for Do Not Track, exciting event announcements from Apple and Google, and several product launches and releases. The news might not be so good if you’ve invested in Facebook or RIM, or if your name is Julian Assange, but at least you’re not a mayor who has just been arrested by the FBI. Business Facebook’s foray into the public market is looking less and less like the grand success Mark Zuckerberg &… more

It has been a most unusual week in the tech world, with neither news about Apple nor any more mind-numbing patent lawsuits. Instead we’ve got some exciting intrigue at Yahoo! – did he alter it or didn’t he? – along with good news on ACTA, bad news about The Pirate Bay (sort of), several announcements from Facebook, and a couple of highly amusing computer glitches. Read about all this, and more, below. Business The headlines this week were that Scott Thompson, CEO of Yahoo!, is being accused of falsifying his academic record. Thompson’s official Yahoo! profile (included as part of regulatory filings submitted to the SEC), as well as his official bio from his previous job at eBay, stated that… more

Braeburn, Gala, McIntosh, Pink Lady, Granny Smith… They’re all great varieties of apple, but whatever your favourite there’s no denying that none has ever been so popular or successful as Apple, Inc. itself. This week we’ve got a wide range of news and statistics from the world’s largest technology company, including its soaring share prices, its legal machinations in Germany, the sooner-than-expected developer preview of its latest operating system, and the results of the first inquiry into its labour standards. But never fear – we will actually cover other topics too. We’re also looking at a coup at Yahoo!, yet another ACTA setback, Google being a little evil, a bunch of Mass Effect 3 news, and much more besides. Read on and… more

So, read on to find out all about the latest and greatest tech news, and I’ll see you in two weeks time – even technology needs a Christmas break! In this week’s edition of TSR on tech, we’ve got all the major headlines from the last fortnight (we didn’t manage to publish last week, but watch this space for a good reason), and they sure are headlines! In the world of business, Apple is rearranging its board members, whilst Facebook is upsetting Europe and Oxford is upsetting privacy advocates. Gamers were thrilled (or repulsed, depending on how much they like Call of Duty) by the releases of Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim, and we saw the launches of iTunes Match, Google Music and the Kindle Fire. Not only that, but the US is preparing for the inevitable zombie apocalypse. Yes, it’s all go for the technology world, so read on… more
