Photographs taken by _ show Curiosity landing on Mars using a parachute.

A truly thrilling week for technology this week: let’s face it, it was all about NASA’s Curiosity landing on Mars. Rest assured that we’ve got plenty of that below, but other things did happen too – after all, there has to be some reason for that imperious picture of Marissa Mayer – and so we’ve also got the latest on everything from Apple v Samsung in San Jose to Mat Honan’s frankly epic hacking, to the Ouya (you’ll find out) to the latest gossip from Iran’s Supreme Leader. All this and more; what are you waiting for? Business Marissa Mayer, Yahoo!’s new CEO, has continued her purge of the senior staff and executives at the company. First to go this week… more

The Pebble E-Paper Watch broke the Kickstarter funding record previously held by Double Fine's adventure game

It was all about the numbers this week, as several major companies reported their quarterly earnings. Many hit the mark but we weren’t left without any surprises; you’ll have to read on to find out more. If finance isn’t your thing then don’t fret: we’ve also got the low-down on the Flashback virus infecting everyone’s Macs, a brief open beta for Diablo III, a very fancy watch, and MacBook Pro perfume. I kid you not. Business Microsoft’s Q3 earnings were better than expected this week, as the Redmond company reported profits of $5.11bn – 60 cents a share – on revenue of $17.41bn. Analysts had expected $17.18bn. The greatest increases were in Microsoft’s Business Division, which reported a 9% year-on-year… more

Apple invitation

Hurrah – no one is suing anyone else this week! Thankfully we don’t need to repeat last week’s mass (or should that be ‘mess’) of legal rumblings. Instead, we’ve got… job layoffs and the fall from grace of the world’s favourite tech blog (which, for some inexplicable reason, is not TSR). Oh well, what can I say? It’s tough in the world of technology. But it’s not all doom and gloom. We’ll also look at YMAN (Yet More Apple News), some exciting gaming updates, the iPad 3 launch invitation, the highly anticipated Raspberry Pi computer, and much more. Shall we? Business These days it is seemingly impossible to start a weekly news review without mentioning Apple’s latest achievement, and this week… more

I Am Error: Real-money gaming marketplaces

Could this game start a money-making trend? Considering as how this is Blizzard's game, I doubt it. They'll find some way of sucking every coin from our pockets soon enough.

So, I’m going to assume some of the readership knows about Diablo III and the choice Blizzard have made to have its auction house / marketplace run on actual cash. If not, research the topic. But I thought I may as well discuss the the subject before turning the possibility of a real-cash marketplace on other games, and talk about how people might make a living from games that use it. As a student, I am of course desperate for cash (seriously, I’m willing to whore myself out at this point; I charge cheap rates, if anyone’s interested), so the prospect of making my living from games is very enticing – but I don’t really like the idea implemented in Diablo… more

Apple earnings

This week we’ve got more earnings calls (including the largest quarter ever for a technology company), a new CEO at RIM, discussions about Google and Twitter changing various policies, the grim news about ACTA, and many other interesting tidbits besides. Read on as we tackle all the tech news for the past week. Business Apple stole the show this week as quarterly earnings reports continued to roll in, merrily declaring yet another record quarter for Q1 2012. As you might expect, it was certainly a big one – but nobody, including Wall Street analysts, had anticipated just how big it would be. Blowing away predictions of earnings per share of $10.08, Apple instead posted considerably higher earnings per share of… more

I Am Error: A Guild Wars retrospective, part 2

DRAMATIC POSE!

Continued from part 1. The first expansion, Factions, is more of the same, adding a shorter yet no less epic main storyline and two more classes, as well as a whole new Asia-themed world to explore, which is my favourite yet. The enemies aren’t as varied as I’d have liked because the same overarching villain is fought throughout the story and his servants basically comprise the enemies in most missions and areas, but that isn’t to say they aren’t good to fight – they’re tricksy little buggers who decide to explode with area-effect nonsense every time you kill one, and my paper-thin assassin with super low health was basically screwed once I’d weakened down a group of five or so,… more

I Am Error: MMOs and their future

So now we reach the crux of the matter. My rambling about Guild Wars has merely been a preamble – admittedly a very lengthy preamble yet one that was no less insightful or awesome (shut up, yes it was) – to this article. I’m a bit of an MMO bi-polar, because I both love and hate them. Not exactly a unique perspective on the genre, but as it is my perspective, obviously everyone on the internet needs to know my opinion. Yes, they do. So why do I like MMOs, and why do I hate them? Well, the main reason I despise MMORPGs is what they do to people who play them. I covered this in my previous article on… more
