RNC: the Republican Party Platform shows just how extreme the GOP has become

The Daily Beast’s Andrew Sullivan rationalises his conservatism by wanting to preserve what is good about the present – not regressing into a fictionalised past. Although I do not subscribe to any form of conservatism, this is the honourable face of the American right-wing. The Republican Party, however, has abandoned this conservatism in favour of reactionary social policy, fiscal hypocrisy, and generally doing anything to get into the White House. They mainly do this by evoking pity at the current state of America and then proceeding to outline a utopia where the US can do away with necessary resorts such as abortion, welfare and foreign aid. The modern Republican Party offers nothing to the vulnerable; not even the rugged individualism it… more
Equine lynchpin’s masterplan revealed

There had to be someone right at the heart of it, at the eye of the storm. The Murdochs were too obvious, and too indiscrete. Aidan Burley, Nazi impersonator?

Aidan Burley has been in hot water recently over his unfortunate decision to attend a Nazi-themed stag party at a French ski resort. The former Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) and current Conservative MP for Cannock Chase has apologised repeatedly for the incident, but despite this the prime minister remains under great pressure to remove him from the party (he’s already been sacked from his job as PPS). Burley is also being investigated by French prosecutors under charges which include incitement of racial hatred and being a Nazi apologist. Reading this story, it is easy to get the idea that Burley might have dressed up as a Nazi, or in some way impersonated one. Honestly, I think coverage has been slightly misleading in this respect:… more
£60 million is a small price to pay to keep Michael Gove distracted
| January 24, 2012 | Posted by Cameron MacLeod under satire |
With the exception of everyone who isn’t a member of the Tory cabinet or the royal family, we’ve all come to love Michael Gove’s latest initiative. Plans have been put into place to commission a new royal yacht, and it’s a snip at 2,500 times the average UK annual earnings or, if you prefer, 6,600 years of top university tuition. The people of Britain were given the opportunity to make their most meaningful contribution to society yet, by consenting to the diversion of a portion of the apparently exorbitant government budget towards the noble endeavour. Unfortunately, British taxpayers remained uninspired, and so it was left to Canada and Lord Ashcroft to pick up the shortfall. Though this scheme initially appears incredibly unhelpful,… more
