Video Games – a violent menace?

videogame

I love video games, despite not owning an Xbox or any other assorted games console – I have in the past owned a console, just not right this minute. I brother and myself got our first serious game – for the play station – in 2004 – age eight, we got a couple of games for Christmas our favourite of which was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.  It should be noted for my parents benefit that we bellowed for San Andreas, but it was decidedly too violent. Vice City however, had been what we will call “product tested” by our 13-year-old friend from up the street and our uncle, who said it wasn’t too inappropriate. And so we tucked in. Being excited… more

Saturday 22nd December 2012 Wigan vs Arsenal (12:45) Wigan find themselves in the bottom 3 this weekend, and will be wanting to climb out as soon as possible, to avoid a really tough battle to stay up. Their home performances haven’t been too great and they will be wanting to convert some of their draws to wins, however this game is unlikely to see them get any points. Arsenal have the third best goal difference in the league, compared to Wigan’s 3rd worst, so I can see this game getting messy, much like Arsenal’s game against Reading did on Monday. Prediction: 0-4 Man City vs Reading (15:00) Man City are currently 6 points off of top place, and if they… more

Football predictions: 7-11 December 2012

Football

My last set of predictions saw me get again only 4 correct results (one of which was a perfect score), this is poor, but I think it is due to so many upsets, with Chelsea, Arsenal and West Brom all losing. This week I am going to try something new, and predict many more games but not write about each game. Instead I will have a paragraph talking about the league overall. Barclays Premier League 8th December Arsenal 2-1 West Brom Aston Villa 1-1 Stoke Southampton 2-1 Reading Sunderland 0-1 Chelsea Swansea 2-0 Norwich Wigan 0-1 QPR 9th December Man City 2-1 Man Utd Everton 1-1 Tottenham West Ham 1-0 Liverpool 10th December Fulham 1-0 Newcastle 11th December Sunderland 1-0 Reading My… more

Premier League preview: 20-21 October 2012

The last set of premiership games (6-7 October) saw me predict 5 correct outcomes with 2 perfect results, which is alright but not perfect, so once again I will attempt to predict the upcoming games, offering a little insight into why I have gone for that result. Saturday 20th October Tottenham vs Chelsea (12:45) 5th against 1st in what should be an exciting game involving two teams flying high currently. Tottenham have won their last 4 premiership games in a row, and are also yet to lose at home. Chelsea are yet to lose all season and are looking formidable in front of goal. I think the outcome of this game will be decided by something impressive, probably ending up… more

I Am Error: Open world or linear?

If this was an actual world... Well, we'd all be eaten by dragons, but it would still be awesome.

I’m sure the wider world has by now experienced Skyrim, which means most people should be familiar with the term “open world games.” True, there were other open world games before Skyrim, for example Red Dead Redemption, which is very, very good, and Grand Theft Auto, which is very, very bad (strange how Rockstar manages to occupy both ends of the spectrum), but Skyrim really brought home the open world style, and of course – the most important thing – they did it well. But which are better: open world or linear games? There is one major problem with open world games, in that, if you take examples like Skyrim and Red Dead, there’s just so damn much to experience that you… more

Google+

Google+

Google+ is actually the latest in a lengthy line of attempts by Google to get into the social networking business. After the privacy debacle sparked by Buzz, where Gmail integration meant potentially sensitive information about users’ contacts was made public by default, and the hideously confusing Wave (which might actually have been quite useful if anyone could have worked out how to use it or what it was for), Google has some considerable stigma to overcome if Google+ is going to be taken seriously. You can sign up for Google+ with your existing Google account (the one you use for Youtube, Gmail, Google Docs and iGoogle, among other things), although right now you will need an invitation as Google+ is still in… more

How far can gaming be considered an artform?

Final Fantasy

For Simon Perkins’ take on this topic, go here. The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. So how does this apply to gaming? Well firstly, gaming isn’t just visual art; its primary aim should be to create an immersive environment, so this should include the sound and plot line that is created as well. In my opinion Square Enix have come closest to achieving an art form with gaming epics such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. For example, Final Fantasy 10: The story begins in the past in Zanarkand, a… more

BioWare: Coming up this year

Bioware

If you haven’t yet guessed, I’m a bit of a fan-boy of all things BioWare. Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins, Baldur’s Gate and the monumental Knights Of The Old Republic are just some of the awesome games included in their list of fantastic titles. I’ve never encountered a bad BioWare game, and I hope that this year stays true to that. Let’s have a look at what is coming out in 2011 for BioWare. Mass Effect 3: Yes, yes, I know, lots of stuff on Mass Effect. I’m a fan-boy and damn proud of it. But this will be the last about it, I swear. Mass Effect 3, the epic final conclusion to the Mass Effect trilogy, will tell the… more
