A slower week for technology this week, not to say that there aren’t some interesting stories – the business news this week was largely characterised by the BlackBerry service outage, and Apple has released some important security updates which are worth looking at. Additionally, the iPhone 4S went on sale, iOS 5 and iCloud became available, HTC announced a phone which is practically a tablet, and Google is finally canning Buzz. Read on for all this and more. Apple announces Lion, iOS 5, iCloud at WWDC

On Monday morning Apple held the opening keynote for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, where Steve Jobs and other executives announced more details about Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5, and introduced Apple’s new cloud-storage and syncing service, iCloud. What can we expect from WWDC?

The Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, is Apple’s annual event for talking to developers and showcasing their latest software developments. As usual the company’s shroud of secrecy has been lifted only at the very last moment, but with just one week to go we finally have a press release with some information about what to expect; until now, nobody even knew what time the conference would begin. The statement, released May 31st, confirms that WWDC will focus on three main topics: Lion, the eighth version of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the upcoming version of Apple’s mobile operating system; and a mysterious, hitherto unconfirmed service known only as iCloud.
