The Host

Firstly, I feel that I must apologise for my absence from The Student Review; I found my time suddenly filled with A-Level coursework, novels and revision based around Nazi Germany and assorted timelines of British Prime Ministers since 1903. While I had started to write this article a few weeks ago, I have only just found the time to finish it. With my exams so close, I dare say that you are quite lucky to be reading this review at all, as I hadn’t planned to post it until late May. On another note, if any of you have seen the movie adaption of this novel, or have even read the book, please feel free to drop me a line… more

Far beyond dead: The endurance of the zombie in modern cinema

In the pantheon of cinematic monsters, there seems to be something of a hierarchy. Werewolves rarely get the love and respect they deserve, and the likes of ghosts and demons shuffle somewhat uncomfortably on the side-lines of popular enjoyment (they’re going through a hard time as of late, with the tiresome slamming doors and phantom footprints of the Paranormal Activity films, and limp jump scares of The Woman in Black, being recent examples of how to make them dull rather than scary). Vampires remain consistently ‘cool’; ripe for interpretation and reinvention, with the old-world romance of Dracula giving way to the nightmarish creatures of 30 Days of Night, then the sparkly big-haired hormone-machines of the Twilight series, with multiple other… more

Interview with a real Vampire – and no, he doesn’t sparkle

Interview with the Vampire

Have you ever been to a Twi-hard’s house? If not, let me tell you how it goes. T-shirts, bedspreads, signed photos, posters, magazines and wristbands saying “Mrs Cullen” spill out of every room, the Cullen family tree is in pride of place in the kitchen, and my personal favourite: the “Top 50 reasons why I love Edward Cullen” toilet paper in in the bathroom. It is pretty clear by now that the Twilight franchise has taken the world by storm and made a more than healthy fortune out of it. Up to Breaking Dawn Part 1 the films made $265mn and it is estimated that the author Stephenie Meyer has pocketed more than $300mn from the books. What could possibly… more

AJ’s advice – scary movies

Horror movie

So here we are once again, a week later and with our Twilight bashing all finished. Today, I want to talk to you about scary movies; I love scary movies. They can be really good fun, though there are people who just can’t handle the stress and that’s fair enough. For the rest of us, however, I want to ensure we make the most of our scary movie experiences. I’d like to think that over the years I’ve worked out a pretty decent way to watch scary things – at least, it works for me, so it might for you too! One of the perhaps harsher things that you could do (I confess: I’m a terrible person) is bring someone who hates… more

AJ’s advice – dealing with Twihards

Haters don't sparkle

I think it’s safe to say that we live in a society riddled with throngs of a new generation of obsessive, hormonal, teenage fan-girls and fan-boys, the most intense of which – at least of the ones I’ve encountered – must be the Beliebers, the Twihards and the Potterheads. Goodness me, they bring us a whole new level of fandom, and in some cases shriek in such a high pitched manner that either we’re all deafened or only the local dogs react. But today, I want to put the Beliebers to one side; I don’t care enough to, well, care about them. I’m also going to leave out the Potterheads because, as you can tell from my Pottermore post, I’m… more

Should I read… Dark Romance?

Dark Romance

If you’re like me, and frequently visit Waterstones (often unnecessarily), you may have, when it sprung up in the teenage section, despaired at the new addition of a “Dark Romance” genre shelf. But my weeping at the sight of it is not a mournful nostalgia for the time when that genre didn’t even exist – to some signifying the death of decent literature – but rather for the fact that the only reason for its existence is Stephenie Meyer – who is the death of decent literature. It seems a shame to me that this trend for supernatural stories, which made urban fantasy far more acceptable and accessible, only came to the fore to feed the dribbling hordes of Twilight fans… more

Should I read… Twilight?

Twilight

Controversially – particularly for a first, tentative post – I am going to say yes. (Though this is perhaps not controversial at all – I can never keep up with whether the number of Twilight haters outweighs the number of Twihards, as the former are usually a lot louder and more articulate in their arguments.) I would just like to state for the record that my vote in favour is not due to my fetish for sparkly vampires, nor for Robert Pattison. I am, in fact, a stout Twilight hater. I would simply argue that, if you want to slate Stephanie Meyer with some integrity, you have to read what you are flaming. Then you can join me in long, angry rants… more
