It’s the Apple edition of TSR on tech, with the WWDC keynote on Monday dominating the news cycle for the rest of the week. There were other goings-on, which we have duly reported on: cuts at Nokia, a rejected appeal for Assange, some important security updates; but all eyes were on San Francisco for Apple’s announcements about hardware updates, the new MacBook Pro with a Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion, and iOS 6. For once it has been a generally positive week in tech, with good news on ACTA (i.e. bad news for ACTA) and an outcome to the Google-Oracle Java suit that will have developers everywhere cheering. There are also some nice announcements from Facebook, a slight increase in momentum for Do Not Track, exciting event announcements from Apple and Google, and several product launches and releases. The news might not be so good if you’ve invested in Facebook or RIM, or if your name is Julian Assange, but at least you’re not a mayor who has just been arrested by the FBI. Apple announces Lion, iOS 5, iCloud at WWDC

On Monday morning Apple held the opening keynote for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, where Steve Jobs and other executives announced more details about Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5, and introduced Apple’s new cloud-storage and syncing service, iCloud. What can we expect from WWDC?

The Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, is Apple’s annual event for talking to developers and showcasing their latest software developments. As usual the company’s shroud of secrecy has been lifted only at the very last moment, but with just one week to go we finally have a press release with some information about what to expect; until now, nobody even knew what time the conference would begin. The statement, released May 31st, confirms that WWDC will focus on three main topics: Lion, the eighth version of Mac OS X; iOS 5, the upcoming version of Apple’s mobile operating system; and a mysterious, hitherto unconfirmed service known only as iCloud.
